PREFACE

Trade union is any combination of workmen or employers formed for the purpose of regulating the relations between workmen and employers, or workmen and workmen or employers and employers. Any two or more registered trade unions can constitute Federation of trade unions. Trade unions or federations of trade unions can be registered with the National Industrial Relations Commission under Industrial Relations Act, 2012 or with the Provincial Labour Departments under concerned provincial Industrial Relations Acts.

I have been striving to know about authentic data of trade unions and federation of trade unions registered with NIRC and with the Labour Departments. However, one cannot find such compiled data and different quarters are giving imaginary figures about number of trade unions and federations of trade unions registered in the country. I have started an exercise to consolidate data of all Registered Trade unions and Federations of trade unions.

In this regard as a first step the NIRC has compiled data of all registered federations in this compendium. Federations of trade unions registered with NIRC contain trade unions registered with the NIRC as well as with the provincial labour departments. Therefore this compilation may not be taken as total number of unionized workmen in the country or in establishments of trans-provincial nature.

Main features of this compilation are:

1) This is an authentic list of all Federations of Trade Unions presently registered with the National Industrial Relations Commission under IRA-2012

2) Most of the Federations in this list along with trade unions registered in the NIRC also include trade unions registered with the provincial labour departments.

3) The details of trade unions affiliated with these federations have been obtained from presidents/general secretaries of the federations, which data has not been verified by the NIRC and has been included as such in this list.

4) The list has been arranged in descending order i.e. the most representative Federation of trade unions is on the top of the list.

5) These lists were uploaded on the website on 04-01-2023 and has been submitted to the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development vide letter No 5(1)/2022-R Dated 24-01-2023
